Experts for expanded cultivation of HYV mustard seeds

Agriculture Experts at a farmers’ filed day have stressed on expanded cultivation of high yielding variety (HYV) of mustard seed using the latest agro-technologies to achieve self-reliance on production of oil seed.
They also mentioned that there was a tremendous prospect of meeting edible oil demand of the country through increased production of the HYV oil seed saving over Taka 6,000 crores annually by bringing edible oil import to the zero level.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organised the event in village Kharija Golna under Golna union of Jaldhaka upazila in Nilphamari district on Monday afternoon for harvesting high yielding varieties mustard BARI-14 and BARI-15.
Around 200 male and female framers, including members of Kharija Golna Livelihoods Field School (LFS), sub-assistant agriculture officers and local elite were present.
Jaldhaka upazila Chairman Alhaj Syed Ali attended the farmers’ filed day as the chief guest with Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Shah Muhammad Mahfuzul Haque in the chair.
Jaldhaka upazila Vice-chairman Mrs Riva Akhter and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Rashedul Haque were present as special guests.
Agriculturist Shah Muhammad Mahfuzul Haque narrated about the farming technologies, agronomical and pests’ management for successful cultivation of the high yielding variety BARI Sorisha-14 and BARI-15 to get maximum production.
He also discussed the huge profits of adopting the mixed and inter-cropping methods of crop farming with proper seed and pests’ management to increase production of oil seeds like BARI Sorisha-14 and BARI-15 in the area.
“The farmers can get maximum yield and quality seeds through expanded cultivation of HYV mustard seed evolved by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) in between the gap of harvesting short duration Aman and cultivation of Boro rice,” he said.
The chief guest said increased cultivation of HYV oil seed adopting the latest technologies would not only boost production, but also meet the local demand of edible oil reducing dependence on import improving soil health simultaneously.
