The Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority has proposed hiking the price of water by 40 percent in one go in order to make up for losses.
But consumers’ right activists allege CWASA has made the proposal without holding any public hearing
A 5 percent price hiked in January last means the citizens of the port city are currently paying Tk 7.61 per unit (1,000 litres) water for household connections. The price is Tk 21.56 per unit for industrial connections If the proposal to hike the price again is approved, household connection will cost Tk 10 per unit and industrial one Tk 32 per unit.
The CWASA recently sent the proposal to the local government ministry to raise water price by 31.41 percent for household and 48.42 percent for industrial connections. The average proposed hike is 40 percent.
CWASA Managing Director AKM Fazlullah told media on Wednesday that now the ministry will fix the hiked price Chittagong WASA has 63,545 connections, including 88 percent for households.
In the proposal to push the price, CWASA said it has to spend Tk 15.06 to produce a unit of water while the average price of water is Tk 9.27 per unit. CWASA MD Fazlullah said it can raise the price by 5 percent once a year in line with law. It needs the ministry’s permission in case of more hikes.
The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) President SM Nazer Hossain told that CWASA did not hold a public hearing before making the proposal. “But a public hearing is a must to hike water price in line with the law. CAB disagreed with the CWASA claim over the cost to produce water.
