The traders of the principal business hub of the port city -Chakta Khatungonj formed human chain on Saturday in front of the traders association at Khatungonj from 11 am to 12 noon.
During the human chain, all shops and the business establishments were closed.
The human chain organized under the banner of Chaktai-Khatungonj Hoarders Traders welfare Samity The human chain placed 7-point demands to the concerned authorities including severe water-logging.
President of the association Solaiman Badsha presided over it.
The demands include- revive of navigation in Karnapuli channel, eviction of illegal installations from river banks, construction of permanent embankment beside river, sluice gate at the estuary of Chaktai khal , save Chaktai-Khaungong from terrorism, construction of public toilets, construction of community hall and interrupted power supply in the business hub.
President of the association Solaiman Badsha told that due to water-logging , the commodities of millions of taka are being damaged as a result the traders are becoming defaulters to the banks.
He warned for tougher movement if the water-logging is not solved immediately to save the traders of the business hub. City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin was present in it as chief guest. He exchanged views with the business community in the human chain and expressed solidarity with the demands of the traders.
City Mayor in his deliberations said lack of long term plans earlier, the present situation in the are being witnessed like deadly disease. City Mayor said a number of sluice gates will be erected on the estuaries of 26 khals of the city very shortly and the dredging in Karanphuli river will begin soon.
Among others, Managing director of Mir group Abdus Salam, former Director of Chittagong Chamber Alamgir Parvez, former councilor of Boxirhat ward Jamal Hossain, business leader Jahangir Alam, Nuruddin and Md. Shahabuddin also spoke in it.
