Authorities of Chittagong Custom House (CCH) on Wednesday seized a container of Benson cigarettes imported by a private firm from Dubai by false declaration.
Officials of Customs Intelligence recovered 288 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth TK 7.25 crore from a container on Wednesday morning. On receipt of secret information, the authority conducted drive at a Container Yard at Patenga detained a container loaded with foreign made Benson Cigarettes at around 11-30am on Wednesday. Zakir Hossain, deputy director of Customs Intelligence said according to the document, one Zenitic Fashion having address of Gazipur in Dhaka imported the container giving declaration of importing different types of knit composite products from Dubai through Saki Shipping lines.
The owner of the importing firm and its representatives went into hiding after seizure of the goods.
CCH officials said they would take legal steps against the persons involved in the forgery.
CCH authority filed a case before the Bandar thana police for alleged import of contraband cigars with false declaration of garments accessories availing the bond facilities.
Mentionable that earlier on February 25 last, a container of benson cigarettes also seized in Chittagong port and four persons including the Managing Director of Saki Shipping Line Anowar Shawkat were arrested in connection who later released on bail. These cigarette were imported with false declaration of cotton yarn in the name of a garments factory based on Gazipur , sources said.
