Foreign missions condole Hadi’s death

A number of foreign missions stationed in Dhaka have expressed deep condolences over the demise of Sharif Osman Hadi, who died in Singapore on Thursday while undergoing surgical brain operation as he was shot in the head by assailants in Dhaka recently.

The missions include the United States, the United Kingdom, European Union in Bangladesh.

The United States in a statement said, “The US Embassy joins the people of Bangladesh in mourning the loss of youth leader Sharif Osman hadi and offers our deepest condolences to his family friends and supporters.”

In another message for the US citizens, the US said, “Media reports that the body of youth leader Hadi will land in Dhaka on Friday.

His funeral prayer is expected to be held on Manik Mia Avenue on Saturday. Extremely heavy traffic is expected in the area and throughout Dhaka.”

“US citizens should vigilance and remember that gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings,” it added.

In a statement, the EU wrote : “We are deeply saddened by the death of Sharif Osman Hadi and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those affected.”

Apart from the US, the UK in a statement said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and supporters at this difficult time.”

Alongside it, the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) in Bangladesh comprised of 10 foreign countries including UK has strongly condemned the attacks carried out last night against journalists, editors, and media houses.

“Such acts of violence and intimidation are unacceptable and strike at the heart of press freedom and the public’s right to be informed,” it added.

“We call for the safety of all media professionals to be ensured and for swift, impartial investigations so that those responsible are held to account. Journalism must be able to carry out their work without fear,” it added.

“Protecting them is essential to upholding the rule of law, democratic values and an open, informed society,” MFC said.
