BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday expressed hope that Bangladesh would once again become a truly democratic state under the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
“The country will move forward on the democratic path through Tarique Rahman, and the people will regain their democratic rights. His majestic return Thursday carries that message,” Fakhrul said.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar before paying tribute at the grave of BNP founder and martyred President Ziaur Rahman.
Fakhrul said the people of the country had warmly welcomed Tarique Rahman with a grand reception. “He has returned with a message of change,” he said.
According to Fakhrul, Tarique Rahman’s homecoming is not merely a political event but the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s history.
“His return has brought a positive change to politics. After a long period of stagnation, fresh air has begun to flow,” he added.
He said people have started dreaming again, with Tarique Rahman now standing at the centre of those hopes. Fakhrul expressed firm confidence that Tarique would properly implement the far-reaching plans he has undertaken for the welfare of the people.
BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman had introduced multi-party democracy in Bangladesh, which was later preserved through difficult struggles by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
“Today, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, that democracy will fully blossom,” Abbas said.
He also claimed that the confusion and uncertainty among the public regarding election-related issues had been removed following Tarique Rahman’s return.
“Tarique Rahman’s presence has brought clarity to the political landscape. People are now far more confident about a free and fair election,” he added.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after nearly 17 years abroad. The aircraft carrying him, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima Rahman entered Bangladesh’s airspace earlier in the day.
His return has drawn widespread public attention and strong emotional responses from BNP leaders, activists, and supporters across the country. Hundreds of thousands of jubilant supporters gave him a rapturous reception, marking his homecoming as a historic and triumphant moment
