Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said Bangladesh is preparing for a national election that will mark a historic turning point for the nation.
“You have arrived at a time when Bangladesh is experiencing a profound transformation — a movement driven by its young people. We are now preparing for an election that will be a defining moment in our national history,” the Chief Adviser said.
Prof Yunus made the remarks while meeting Canadian Senator Salma Ataullahjan and Members of Parliament Salma Zahid and Sameer Zuberi at the State Guest House Jamuna.
Led by Senator Ataullahjan, the delegation discussed strengthening bilateral trade cooperation and addressing the Rohingya crisis, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
The Chief Adviser briefed the team on the government’s ongoing reforms and preparations for the upcoming February election. He also expressed gratitude to Canada for its continued support for the Rohingya people.
“Eight years have passed. The repatriation of the Rohingya to their homeland remains the only sustainable solution. Around 1.2 million are living here, with thousands of children born and growing up without clarity about their citizenship or future — and this uncertainty breeds frustration.
Now, with funding cuts, the crisis has become even more critical,” Prof Yunus said.
Senator Salma Ataullahjan said she would issue a statement on the Rohingya issue and reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering commitment to supporting the displaced community.
“I have long raised the Rohingya issue. The situation is deeply concerning. The international community must stay focused on ensuring their safety and dignity,” she said, thanking Prof Yunus for his continued advocacy.
MP Sameer Zuberi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, reiterated Canada’s interest in broadening trade relations with Bangladesh.
“We are working to diversify our trade. Bangladesh and Canada share strong people-to-people ties. Our Prime Minister’s recent visit to Asia was aimed at expanding and deepening trade partnerships,” he noted.
The delegation also included Mahmuda Khan, Global CEO of Human Concern International (HCI); Masum Mahbub, CEO of Human Concern USA (HCUSA); Ahmad Attia, CEO of Gestalt Communications; and Usama Khan, CEO of Islamic Relief Canada.
During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities in sectors such as garments and agriculture and discussed expanding Canadian investment in Bangladesh’s rapidly growing export industries.
National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman and Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed were also present at the meeting.
