Ex-CJ Khairul gets bail

The High Court granted bail on Sunday to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in four cases, including one related to the killing of a Jubo Dal activist during the July uprising and another over alleged verdict forgery linked to the caretaker government system.
The order was passed by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Khairul Alam and Justice Md Sagir Hossain.
However, lawyers said Khairul Haque will not be released immediately as another case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against him is still pending.
Senior lawyer Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju, Barrister Sara Hossain, Sayed Ahmed Raja and lawyer Monayem Nabi Shahin appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Zahirul Islam Sumon represented the state.
Khairul Haque was arrested on July 24 last year from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the killing of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during the July movement in Jatrabari, Dhaka.
Apart from that case, he faces four other cases. On August 4, the ACC filed a case against him on allegations of corruption and forgery related to land plots.
Another case was filed on August 27 with Shahbagh Police Station by Supreme Court lawyer Muzahedul Islam Shahin, accusing him of forging a verdict concerning the caretaker government system.
Two additional cases were filed on August 25 at Fatulla and Bandar police stations in Narayanganj by Abdul Bari Bhuiyan, former president of the district bar association, and Nurul Islam Molla.
After lower courts rejected his bail petitions in these cases, Khairul Haque moved the High Court seeking bail. The High Court later issued a rule regarding bail in five cases.
Hearings have so far been completed in four cases, excluding the ACC case.
ABM Khairul Haque served as the 19th chief justice of Bangladesh from September 27, 2010, to May 17, 2011.
He later served three terms as chairman of the Bangladesh Law Commission before resigning in August 2024 following the fall of the Awami League government.
