Barrister Mainul Hosein: A lifetime defender of democracy

Speakers at a discussion and Doa Mahfil have remembered Barrister Mainul Hosein saying that he spent his entire life fighting for democracy and never backed down, no matter how difficult or challenging the circumstances.
They made the remarks at the discussion held in Dhaka on the occasion of his second death anniversary, organised by the Bangladesh Association of Journalists for Human Rights (BAJHR) under the theme “Bangladesh, Human Rights and the Role of Barrister Mainul Hosein.”
Speakers recalled that during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government, he was allegedly subjected to physical and mental harassment while in detention.
Despite these hardships, he remained committed to the rule of law and continued advocating for democratic principles.
Syed Tosharaf Ali, Advisory Editor of The New Nation, attended the programme as the chief guest, while senior journalist S M Jamal Uddin, also the president of BAJHR, presided over the event. Abu Bakar Siddik conducted the discussions.
Speaking at the event, Syed Tosharaf Ali highlighted that Barrister Mainul Hosein placed the highest importance on freedom of speech and never compromised on democratic values.
“Throughout his life, he remained firmly committed to upholding the rule of law,” he said.
He also remembered Mainul Hosein’s sacrifices, noting that he gave up personal comforts and even risked free thinking and freedom of expression for the greater good of democracy.
Md Abdur Sabur, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said, “All we can do now is to pray for his departed soul.
He gave up so much, including his personal liberties, in the fight for our freedoms.”
The programme began with a Doa Mahfil for the eternal peace of Barrister Mainul followed by tributes to his lifelong contributions.
Speakers highlighted his unwavering commitment to justice, public service, and democratic values.
M A Hasam Raju, Moinuddin Quadery Showkat, Zeauddin, and M Enayetullah also spoke at the event.
