Staff Reporter :

Dhaka has been experiencing an unusually severe cold wether over the past few days, sending temperatures to some of the lowest levels recorded this winter and causing widespread discomfort across the capital.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the mercury in Dhaka dipped to around 9–10 degrees Celsius early in the mornings, accompanied by dense fog and chilly northwesterly winds, making it feel significantly colder.

The cold weather has disrupted daily routines, particularly for office-goers, students, and low-income residents.

Thick fog during early morning hours has reduced visibility on roads, leading to slower traffic movement and delays in public transport. River transport services in nearby areas have also been affected as visibility dropped sharply at times.

Hospitals and clinics in the city have reported a noticeable increase in patients suffering from cold-related illnesses, including fever, cough, asthma complications, and respiratory infections. Children and elderly people are among the most vulnerable.

Doctors have advised residents to take precautionary measures. such as wearing warm clothing, avoiding exposure to cold winds in the early morning and late night, and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist.

The situation has been particularly harsh for the homeless and day laborers, many of whom lack adequate winter clothing.

Various charitable organizations and social groups have stepped up efforts to distribute blankets and warm clothes in different parts of the city, including bus terminals, footpaths, and slum areas.

The Dhaka North and South City Corporations have also coordinated limited relief activities, though many say more support is needed.

Meteorologists say the cold wave is likely due to cold air sweeping down from northern regions, a typical winter phenomenon, though its intensity this season has been higher than usual.

The BMD has forecast that the cold conditions may persist for a few more days, with night and early morning temperatures remaining low before a gradual rise is expected.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially during early morning travel, and to take necessary steps to protect themselves and vulnerable groups from the biting cold.
