River erosion wipes out 10 villages in Mirzapur

At least 10 villages of Fatepur Union are missing from the map due to severe river erosion in Tangail’sMirzapur.

It has been alleged that many families affected by river erosion are living inhumane conditions under the open sky. Crop lands, houses, plants, bazaars, mosques, temples and educational institutions are suffering extensive damage.

On Sunday (June 30), the affected residents complained that as a result of the rise in the water, crop lands, houses, educational institutions, mosques, temples, Hat Jahar in various areas including Fatepur, Tholpara, HilraAdabari, Pardighi, Chaklesh, Bailanpur, Gogail, Garail were destroyed by the rising water.

And the roads have been severely damaged. As a result, various facilities are under threat. Several hundred families of Fatepur Union are suffering from insecurity.

The direct communication between BasailUpazila and MirzapurUpazila has been cut off due to the collapse of the river. Fatepur high school, madrasa, mosque are in severe river erosion.

Earlier on June 24, to see the sufferings of the people in the areas, member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Jute and Textiles Ministry and Tangail District Awami League Organizing Secretary Khan Ahmed Shubo, MP along with the officials of Water Development Board visited different areas of Bangsai-Louhajong River.

They also visited several areas including Fatepur, Tholpara, Bankata, Sutanari, HilraAdabari in Fatepur Union of Bangsai River.

At this time Union Awami League president and local UP chairmanAbdur Rauf Mia, general secretary of Union Awami League AbulKalam Azad, Personal Assistant to MP Mir Asif Anik along with officials of Tangail District Water Development Board were present.

After inspecting the breached areas, he directed the Water Development Board to drop geo bags on the river bank as soon as possible.
