A group of students from Dhaka University (DU) staged a protest march and rally at midnight on Thursday, demanding a ban on the Awami League.

Students from various dormitories gathered at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, chanting slogans against the deposed ruling party.

Protesters were heard shouting slogans such as: “In 2024 Bangladesh, there’s no place for the Awami League!”, “Set it on fire, burn it down!”, “Burn the Awami League out of power!”, “Awami League, stand back!”, “Ban the Awami League immediately!”.

The students accused the Awami League of establishing fascism over the past 16 years through enforced disappearances, killings, and repression, stating that they would not accept any rehabilitation of the party.

“We will not betray the martyrs of 2024,” they declared. “Since July, the Awami League has lost its political relevance. If any attempt is made to rehabilitate them, another July will come.”

They also criticised the interim government for failing to prosecute the Awami League, despite victims of July’s violence still suffering in hospitals. “The Awami League must be tried and banned immediately,” they demanded.
