North South University (NSU) has undertaken a comprehensive initiative to promote mental health and overall well-being among its students and faculty members. The initiative was jointly launched by the university’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) andCounseling and Well-being Center (CWC).
Growing concern over mental health in educational institutions has been highlighted in recent surveys, which reveal alarming levels of burnout among teachers and rising rates of stress, depression, loneliness, and lack of concentration among students. In response to this reality, NSU authorities have taken effective steps to strengthen mental and holistic well-being across the university, says a press release.
The initiative was inaugurated by NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury. The event was also attended by the University Treasurer, Deans of various faculties, the Proctor, the Registrar, the Director of IQAC, and Heads of different departments.
In his inaugural address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury discussed the multifaceted causes behind the increasing levels of stress and anxiety among young people at home and abroad.
He highlighted issues such as academic pressure, intense competition, employment challenges, and broader social and economic instability, reaffirming the university’s strong commitment to prioritizing overall well-being, particularly mental health, on campus.
As part of the initiative, a team of psychologists has developed a psycho-education or mental health awareness poster incorporating eight research-based, effective self-help strategies. The poster highlights practices such as mindful breaks, healthy emotional expression, calm breathing techniques, stress management, and self-care. It will be displayed and promoted at key locations across the university campus.
