CU teachers observe work abstention

A day- long work abstention called by Public University Teachers’ Federation was observed by the teachers of Chittagong University, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University yesterday.
Following the abstention , the academic and administrative activities came to a halt as no class and examination was held in the above institutions.
Some 200 hundred teachers of Chittagong University demonstrated in front of the Bangabandhu Chhattar, CU campus from 11.00 am, in response to the call from Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association and the teachers of the rest university also demonstrated in their respective premises.
CU teachers also held a procession that rounded the campus.
The speakers said, the teachers’ society got frustrated and annoyed as the government passed the 8th pay scale, ignoring the teachers movement. The teachers will continue their program until meeting their demand.
Prof Dr Abul Mansur, President , CUTA said the teachers observed the program in demand of the urgent autonomous pay scale for the Public University Teachers, terming the approved pay scale as discriminatory.
The demonstration took place, a day after the 8th proposed pay scale was approved in the meeting of the ministry.
The teachers of CU has been running their protest against the 8th pay scale and demanded an autonomous pay scale for the public university teachers for the last three and half months.
Observing the CU, the student appearance of the students was very poor while sources said the students appearance at the other two was also short.
