Crime series is spreading crimes in our youths
MEDIA reports said three teenage students of a madrasa abducted and killed their classmate and they claimed later on interrogation that they drew inspiration from an Indian TV serial to making the experiment. Earlier the body of the 11-year-old victim was recovered from a septic tank in Natore town’s Alaipur area by a RAB-5 team acting on information given by the three teenagers who were arrested from Hefzokhana Ashraful Ulum Hafezia Madrasa.
The arrestees said they were inspired by an Indian TV serial to commit the crime according to news reports and they also recounted how they abducted Tanvir and then slit his throat on August 25. Three days after the child went missing, his father informed the elite force that some unidentified criminals had abducted his son and demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom. RAB got clues about the three by tracking one of the teenagers’ phones.
The teenager’s murder by three other teens is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched by modern Indian TV serials involving violence which shockingly led to the killing in real life. In the beginning, the Indian cultural influence could only be felt through fashion trends; which was considered harmless until some girls killed themselves over not getting famed by wearing dresses worn by their favourite Indian TV stars. This goes to show that the Indian TV shows are adversely impacting our young people even to the extent of murder by experiment. Many believe that there is a growing need for censor some Indian TV crime serials before the spread of its influence to wider part of our younger generation. There must be greater regulation in this regard.
Children unfortunately are getting indulged in many Indian television channels and their crime series because of the easy access to and lack of parental supervision. By the age of 16 many are exposing to violence, sexual and immoral acts. Some such serials even may cause trauma to the young people and in combination with the violence may produce an unbalanced and unhealthy behaviour in them. This is what the three teenagers did. It is senseless to deny the embracing negative effect of the Indian media in our lives.
We must now be selective to the Indian TV serials and the government must devise a censorship system to allow which TV channels can be shown in the country or what serial is helpful to the young people and what is not. In our view there must be a clear policy in this regard.
