Nine projects worth Tk 3.368 cr okayed

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved nine projects involving Tk 3,368.63 crore, including one to construct a dedicated exhibition center at Purbachal new town to host specialized trade fairs.
With ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, the approval came from the 2nd ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that a total of nine projects were approved yesterday with a total outlay of Tk 3,368.63 crore. “Of the total project cost, Tk 2,379.31 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 32.13 crore from the organization’s own fund while Tk 957.19 crore as project assistance,”. Of the approved nine projects, eight are new while one is revised project.
Planning Ministry officials said that, of the total project cost of Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center project, China would provide the bulk of the amount, Tk 625.70 crore, as grant. The government would provide Tk 138.18 crore while the
remaining Tk 32.13 crore would come from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
EPB, under the Ministry of Commerce, will implement the project by June 2018 under the turn-key method with Chinese grant.
Some 20 acres of land is now available for constructing the exhibition center at the new satellite town Purbachal in Narayanganj.
The construction of the exhibition center also aims to create scope for showcasing products of both producers and exporters to attract buyers as well as establish a platform for both the buyers and the sellers.
The exhibition center would have two superior halls with space for 806 booths (9m by 9m) each, apart from parking arrangement for some 1,500 cars. Besides, there will be a conference room, press center, trade information center, reception center, service room, sub-station and other necessary facilities.
The Planning Minister said that, Bangladesh Secretariat would be shifted to the western side of the BICC in future where the Dhaka International Trade Fair is being held every year.
The day’s ECNEC meeting approved another project titled procurement of machineries and equipments for the city corporations and pourashavas from Belarus with Tk 420.30 crore.
Local Government Division will implement the project by June 2016 under which machineries and equipments to be procured from Belarus with Tk 331.49 crore project assistance would be used for waste collection, transportation and cleaning, drain construction, maintenance and cleaning, road construction and maintainable in all the country’s 11 city corporations and 323 pourashavas.
Under the project, there will be procurement of 330 skid steer loaders, 330 drills, 330 excavators,329 twin drum vibratory rollers, 11 baldozer blades, 11 log grapples, 11 wheel loaders, 11 hydraulic hammers, 11 combination asphalt rollers and 11 back hole loaders.
Answering to a query, the Planning Minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already directed the authorities concerned to take steps for fulfilling the basic needs of the people of the enclaves after the recent historic enclave swap.
He said that steps would be taken to ensure construction of roads, schools and colleges, community clinics in the enclaves while the work for giving power connections would begin in those areas over the next three months.
