Samantha Sharmin resigns from NCP
Samantha Sharmin has resigned from the National Citizen Party (NCP), citing ideological differences with the party over its political direction and its inability to uphold its founding values.
She announced her resignation in a Facebook post on Thursday (November 5), saying she had ended nearly a year-long struggle within the party to change its political course.
In her post, Sharmin said she had taken a different position on the question of forming an alliance nearly a year ago, arguing that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was not a suitable political ally, either ideologically or strategically.
She had warned that the NCP would have to pay a heavy price for forming an alliance with Jamaat, she added.
Over the past 11 months, she said, she had submitted written complaints and proposals and engaged in debates and discussions at different levels of the party to express her concerns about its past actions and future direction.
She described her efforts as an ideological struggle within the party, saying she had chosen to challenge its policies through recognised forums in the hope of steering it away from what she considered the wrong path.
“Today, I am announcing the end of this nearly year-long struggle because I no longer believe the NCP can remain sincere to the values on which it was founded,” she wrote.
Sharmin said she could have waited for a more appropriate time to resign, when her departure might have been linked to a particular party decision or action.
However, she considered such a wait meaningless.
She added that even if the NCP eventually decided to withdraw from its alliance with Jamaat, she did not believe it could develop its own political identity, ideas and programmes outside the traditional political framework.
“I want to say unequivocally that political parties belonging to the old system will never help establish a new state system; rather, they will stand in its way,” she wrote.
Her resignation comes after the NCP announced a new committee on October 23, in which she was named joint convener. Her reduced position in the new committee had sparked discussion on social media.
Sharmin said she now believed it was time to make public the differences and discussions she had had with the party leadership and members, as well as supporters outside the party structure.
