Education Minister Dr A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon speaks at the 'Lighting Up the Future: Smart Classroom Donation Ceremony' at Shamsul Haque Khan School premises in the capital on Thursday.

Education Minister Dr A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon has expressed hope that greater cooperation and the exchange of expertise in education and technology will strengthen the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and China.

He said China’s support could open new opportunities to modernise the country’s education system, starting at the primary level, and develop a skilled workforce.

The minister made the remarks at a programme at Shamsul Haque Khan School and College, where smart classroom grants were distributed under an initiative titled ‘Lighting up the Future’.

Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), attended the event.

The college’s Principal Md Mahbubur Rahman, members of its governing body, teachers and students were also present.

Recalling the longstanding relations between the two countries, Milon said the foundation of their friendship had been laid during the tenure of late President Ziaur Rahman.

He said cooperation in various fields, particularly education and technology, would further strengthen bilateral ties.

Milon also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had signed several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during his visit to China to promote cooperation in different sectors, including education.

Referring to the ‘Beijing Agreement’, the minister said cooperation with China in technical education and skills development had already begun.

Under the initiative, Chinese curricula, laboratories, instructors and certification systems are being introduced at nine polytechnic institutes, including Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and an institute in Cox’s Bazar.
