JICA weighs Tk120cr aid for cleaner Ctg

Japanese expert team to visit in December
A JICA delegation met Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Administrator of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), at the City Corporation building on Wednesday to discuss the project.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is considering a grant of around Tk120 crore to modernise waste management in Chattogram, including the purchase of more than 50 modern waste-collection vehicles and the construction of a sanitary landfill.

A JICA delegation discussed the proposed project with Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Administrator Dr Shahadat Hossain at the city corporation building on Wednesday.

The proposed grant would also cover essential equipment for landfill operations, aiming to improve the city’s waste collection and transportation capacity.

The Government of Japan has approved a feasibility study for the project. A JICA expert mission from its headquarters is scheduled to visit Chattogram in December, with the final approval depending on the study’s findings.

The meeting also discussed the construction of a new sanitary landfill to ensure sustainable waste management.

The CCC has already acquired 28 acres of land in the Fateyabad-Nandirhat area, south of the University of Chattogram, for the proposed facility. The site comprises an 18-acre plot and an adjoining 10-acre plot.

JICA Bangladesh Senior Representative Hideki Osawa said the agency’s technical assistance team was working with the CCC on project designs and the Bill of Quantities (BoQ) to expedite preparation of the Development Project Proposal (DPP).

Dr Shahadat thanked JICA for its continued support and assured the agency of the city corporation’s cooperation in completing the feasibility study.

He also sought technical assistance for managing and developing existing landfill sites alongside the proposed new facility.

He stressed that appropriate infrastructure and modern technology were essential to building an environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management system.

CCC Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Shamim Mohammad Khan, Chief Engineer Md Anisur Rahman, JICA Bangladesh Programme Manager Md Abdullah Bin Hossain, and members of the JICA expert team, including Takatoshi Arai, Hirofumi Miyoshi, Satoshi Higashinakagawa and Engineer Golam Sarwar, were present at the meeting.
