Damaged barrier at Pirojpur U-loop poses accident risk
A damaged height-restriction barrier at the Pirojpur-Mograpara U-loop on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway has raised serious safety concerns, with local residents fearing a major accident if the structure collapses.
The barrier was installed to prevent oversized goods-laden vehicles from entering the area. However, a significant portion of its supporting structure has reportedly deteriorated, leaving it in a potentially dangerous condition.
A large section of the concrete foundation at the base of one of the supporting metal pillars has broken away.
The pillar appears to be leaning, raising concerns about the stability of the entire structure. A height restriction of 3.3 metres is displayed on the barrier.
Contacted over the matter, Abdur Rahim, Executive Engineer of the Narayanganj Roads and Highways Department, said he had heard that the repair work would be completed soon.
Despite its damaged condition, rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, motorcycles and other vehicles continue to pass alongside the structure regularly.
Local residents fear that if the weakened pillar gives way or the barrier collapses, it could cause a serious accident and potentially lead to loss of life.
The barrier, originally installed to regulate the movement of large goods-laden vehicles, has itself become a potential threat to road users, raising questions about the maintenance and monitoring of public infrastructure.
Residents said preventive measures should be taken before any accident occurs rather than waiting for a tragedy.
They expressed concern that the hazardous structure has remained unattended for an extended period.
Local residents have appealed to the administration and the Roads and Highways Department to take urgent action to prevent a possible accident and ensure public safety.
They have urged the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate inspection of the barrier at the Pirojpur-Mograpara U-loop and take necessary steps to repair, renovate or replace the damaged structure.
They also called for temporary safety measures to protect pedestrians and vehicles near the affected area until the repair work is completed.
