Panam City, a historic heritage site in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj, attracts large numbers of local and foreign tourists during the day. However, as evening falls, much of the historic city is plunged into darkness due to inadequate lighting and security arrangements.

Local residents and concerned citizens have expressed concern over the lack of adequate lighting and security measures.

Questions have also been raised about the iron-pipe barriers at the entrance, which many believe undermine the site’s aesthetic appeal.

According to local sources, several parts of Panam City remain poorly lit after sunset, raising concerns about possible unwanted activities and the protection of the historic structures.

Mizanur Rahman, general secretary of the Sonargaon branch of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN), said, “Panam City is one of the country’s important archaeological heritage sites. Although the Department of Archaeology has taken charge of the site, proper conservation and security measures must be ensured.

The absence of boundary walls and adequate lighting around the area has left this historic site vulnerable. I urge the concerned authorities to take effective measures without delay.”

Meanwhile, visitors have also expressed dissatisfaction with the existing entrance arrangement.

After purchasing tickets, visitors have to pass through barriers made of iron pipes to enter the main archaeological site. Many believe the arrangement causes inconvenience and affects the site’s aesthetic environment.

Local resident Bakir Jewel said, “There are concerns about the movement of miscreants inside Panam City at night. The authorities should increase surveillance. Besides, replacing the iron-pipe barriers with an attractive and aesthetically designed entrance gate would be a better option.”

When contacted, Assistant Custodian of Panam City Md. Tanzilur Rahman said, “A letter has been sent to the concerned department regarding the matter.”
