ICT to deliver verdict against Hanif today
The tribunal is set to deliver its verdict today against four accused, including Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif, in a case over the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The tribunal fixed October 29 for the verdict on Tuesday, October 27.
All four accused are absconding. State-appointed defence lawyers have represented them during the trial at government expense.
The other accused are Sadar Uddin Khan, president of the Kushtia district Awami League; Azgar Ali, general secretary of the district unit; and Ataur Rahman Ata, general secretary of the Kushtia town Awami League.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim presented arguments on behalf of the prosecution on October 5, while state-appointed defence lawyer Amir Hossain presented arguments for the accused on October 7. The tribunal subsequently kept the case awaiting its verdict.
The case had previously been kept awaiting a verdict on June 10 after both sides concluded their arguments. However, the prosecution later submitted additional evidence, prompting a fresh round of arguments.
According to case documents, on July 27, 2024, Awami League leader Azgar Ali said in a speech outside the party’s Kushtia district office that Hanif had instructed them to suppress the movement by any means necessary.
The prosecution highlighted the statement during its arguments, alleging that the killings in Kushtia were carried out under the influence of the accused’s statements, directives and organisational roles.
The prosecution brought three charges against the accused. These include attending a meeting where Awami League leader Obaidul Quader reportedly said that the Bangladesh Chhatra League alone was sufficient to suppress the movement and expressing support for that position; ordering the killing of students and members of the public and conspiring in connection with the killings at a meeting in Kushtia on July 29; and bearing responsibility for the deaths of six people in the district.
A total of 19 witnesses, including the investigation officer, testified in the case.
The case concerns the deaths of six people and injuries to several others in Kushtia during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The prosecution submitted the formal charges on October 6, 2025. The tribunal framed charges against Hanif and the three other accused on November 2, 2025, and ordered the trial to begin.
