Man beaten to death on child abduction suspicion
A 41-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka after people suspected him of being a child abductor.
The deceased, Alam Sheikh, was reportedly roaming near the hospital’s children’s ward around 11pm on Wednesday when the families of children receiving treatment became suspicious of him.
Tejgaon Division Police Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said the incident took place late on Wednesday night. Police later contacted Alam’s family, who claimed that he was mentally unstable.
According to police, people at the hospital questioned Alam about why he was there. When he reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory answer, a group of people allegedly dragged him downstairs and beat him severely, leaving him dead at the scene.
Police recovered the body after receiving information about the incident through the national emergency service number 999, Mizan said.
He also confirmed that one person had been detained in connection with the killing. “We have detained the mastermind of the incident. The family of the deceased has been informed that a case will be filed against him,” Mizan said.
However, the police official did not provide further details about the detention.
Police identified the victim by matching his fingerprints. Alam was a resident of the Rupnagar area of Dhaka.
His body was subsequently sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The incident highlights the risk of mob violence when people act on suspicion without verifying allegations or informing law enforcement authorities.
