Sylhet farmers busy growing early-season vegetables
Farmers in Sylhet are busy cultivating and tending early-season winter vegetables in the hope of securing higher profits by bringing their produce to market ahead of the peak season. Winter vegetables have already begun appearing in local markets, fetching good prices.
Debal Sarkar, additional deputy director (crops) at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Sylhet, said the district produces a wide variety of crops across its upazilas.
This year, farmers throughout the district, including Sylhet Sadar, are actively cultivating early-season winter vegetables using modern agricultural techniques in anticipation of higher returns.
He said that winter vegetables generally reach the market between November and January.
However, an abundance of produce during this period often prevents farmers from getting fair prices.
In contrast, demand and prices tend to be higher towards the end of the monsoon, beginning in early Kartik, the seventh month of the Bengali calendar.
Gautam Pal, an agricultural officer in South Surma upazila, said cultivating early-maturing vegetable varieties was profitable, prompting more farmers to adopt the practice. He said the produce supplied by local farmers not only meets local demand but can also be transported to other districts.
