9 fishermen sentenced for illegal hilsa fishing

Nine fishermen were detained and sentenced, and about 300,000 metres of banned current nets were seized and destroyed, in an operation against illegal hilsa fishing on the Padma River in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Thursday.

The upazila administration carried out the drive in different parts of the river from the evening until midnight.

Shibchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) H M Ibne Mizan led the operation. Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Nasir Uddin, Upazila Fisheries Officer Satyajit Mazumder, Shibchar police and members of the Charjanajat Marine Police were also present.

The detained fishermen were given various terms of punishment. The nets were destroyed after being seized.

UNO Mizan said the drive is aimed at protecting mother hilsa during the ban period and will continue.
