1,022 puja mandaps ready for Durga Puja
Preparations are nearing completion at 1,022 puja mandaps across Moulvibazar as the Hindu community gears up to celebrate Sharadiya Durga Puja. Artisans and craftsmen are working day and night to complete the idols and decorate the puja mandaps (pavilions).
A total of 1,022 puja mandaps are being prepared across the district’s seven upazilas and five municipalities for the festival. Artisans are busy putting the finishing touches on the idols of Goddess Durga, while colourful decorations are being installed at various mandaps.
The main festivities will begin from today with Maha Shashthi and the Bodhan, the ceremonial awakening of Goddess Durga. The celebrations will continue with Maha Saptami on October 17, Maha Ashtami on October 19 and Maha Navami on October 20. The festival will conclude on October 21 with Bijoya Dashami and the immersion of the idols.
Mahim Dey, general secretary of the Moulvibazar Puja Celebration Council, said the district had a long-standing tradition of communal harmony.
“Durga Puja has been celebrated peacefully in Moulvibazar in the past, and we hope the same atmosphere will prevail this year. Preparations are underway at all 1,022 mandaps,” he said.
Dey urged the authorities to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply to the mandaps during the festival and called on the administration to strengthen security measures. He added that 80 per cent of the puja mandaps across the district were being brought under CCTV surveillance.
He also said the cooperation of the Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) in the respective upazilas had made the organisers’ work significantly easier.
Novel Chakma, additional superintendent of police in Moulvibazar, said a four-tier security arrangement had been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents at the puja mandaps.
“We will coordinate our operations through discussions with local stakeholders and political leaders to ensure that no untoward incidents occur,” he said.
According to the traditional Hindu calendar, Mahalaya was observed on October 10, marking the beginning of the festive atmosphere surrounding Durga Puja.
