SSC retests within 15 days proposed for failed candidates
The government plans to hold supplementary examinations within 15 days of publishing Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results for students who fail in up to two subjects, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said on Tuesday.
Students who fail the retests would be encouraged to pursue technical and vocational education instead of losing another academic year, he said.
Milon announced the plan while inaugurating an orientation training course for 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) general education cadre officials in Bogura.
“We will not carry on the legacy of failure year after year,” the minister said, stressing the need to prevent students from losing an academic year because of examination failures.
He said the retest results would determine whether students could continue in the general education stream or move to vocational education.
Meanwhile, the results of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations are expected to be published between October 25 and 29.
Education boards have sent a proposal to the Ministry of Education recommending that the results be announced on any one of those dates.
The minister stressed the need to provide greater attention to students who fail examinations or drop out of education.
He said technical education was becoming increasingly important in preparing young people for technological changes and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.
The announcement came three days after Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin said the government was considering allowing unsuccessful SSC candidates to retake failed subjects within three months instead of waiting an entire year.
The 2026 SSC and equivalent examination results, published on August 10, showed that 690,608 candidates, or 37.75 per cent, had failed. Following a re-scrutiny of answer scripts, another 4,585 students were declared successful.
