For Cleaners' Affordabl Healthcare

DSCC signs deals with 420 hospitals

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has signed agreements with 420 hospitals to provide affordable healthcare to its cleaners and introduced Tk 4 lakh in financial assistance for the families of workers who die while performing their duties.

The initiatives aim to strengthen health protection, workplace safety and welfare for cleaners, DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam said on Monday.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of beautification work at a secondary transfer station (STS) in North Shahjahanpur in the capital, he said ensuring cleaners’ welfare and providing them with a safe working environment were essential to maintaining the city’s cleanliness.

He said the city corporation had introduced the compensation scheme to support the families of workers who died while carrying out their duties. Under the scheme, the families would receive Tk 4 lakh in financial assistance.

Abdus Salam also stressed the responsibility of business establishments in keeping the city clean, urging them to place their waste in designated bins and maintain cleanliness in the areas in front of their premises.

He said avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal would help preserve urban cleanliness and significantly reduce the risk of dengue.

The administrator also urged residents to report complaints concerning civic services to the city corporation, assuring them that prompt action would be taken upon receiving such complaints.

Following the inauguration ceremony, various types of safety equipment were distributed among cleaners to help protect them at work and reduce health risks.

Abdus Salam appreciated Harpic and Sajeda Foundation for providing protective equipment to the workers.

The DSCC has already undertaken modernisation and beautification work at waste transfer stations in Kalabagan, Sabji Bagan on Old Elephant Road, Malibagh and the Palashi area adjacent to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Mahbubur Rahman Talukder and local leaders were also present at the programme.
