No govt wants syndicates: Food Minister
Food Minister Afroza Khanam has said that no government wants syndicates to operate, as their presence ultimately harms ordinary consumers. “We do not want the word ‘syndicate’ to exist at all. Our main goal is to ensure safe food reaches the people,” she said.
The minister made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after inspecting a government food warehouse and several facilities in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj on Tuesday.
“Our main objective is to ensure safe food for the people. Following the Prime Minister’s directives, the Ministry of Food is working towards that goal,” she said.
“We regularly monitor market conditions, food stocks and the supply system. So far, we have not faced any major problems. We will take the necessary measures so that any emerging issue can be resolved quickly in the future,” Khanam added.
Asked about the launch of a project to produce nutritious rice, the minister said no specific date could be announced at this stage.
“We are here today and will discuss the matter with the concerned authorities. We will try to launch the project as soon as possible,” she said.
The minister began her day’s programme at around 10am with a visit to the Postogola Government Modern Flour Mill in Dhaka. At around 1pm, she reached the Narayanganj Silo and inspected the silo as well as the Narayanganj Premix Kernel Mill located within the facility.
During the visit, the minister discussed grain storage, storage capacity, mill operations and overall food management with officials concerned. She also issued necessary instructions.
Khanam said food storage facilities and other installations across the country are being inspected as part of the responsibilities of the Ministry of Food in line with the Prime Minister’s directives.
“The condition of these facilities, foodgrain storage systems and the working environment of employees are being assessed firsthand so that necessary improvements can be made and problems resolved,” she said. Officials from the administration and relevant departments were present during the inspections.
