SGFL works on 15 wells in Sylhet to boost gas output
The government has adopted a master plan to drill and work over 300 gas wells across the country by 2035 to tackle the energy crisis.
As part of the first phase, 150 wells are scheduled for drilling and workover, with work on 15 wells currently progressing under Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL).
According to SGFL sources, initiatives have been taken to increase gas production by drilling new wells alongside reworking old ones. In line with this, drilling is underway at the Rashidpur-13 well, while work is also ongoing on new exploration wells including Dupitila-1, Sylhet-13 and Hararganj-1.
Officials said prospects of finding gas remain strong if exploration and drilling are conducted around currently active and abandoned gas wells.
They also believe a large reserve of gas may still be found at the Tengratila gas field, which was abandoned following explosions.
Md Faruque Hossain, managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), said, “Drilling and workover operations are progressing at Sylhet Gas Fields.
We have already completed eight workovers and finished drilling five new wells.”
New drilling plans have been undertaken to meet the designated production target by 2031. As part of this initiative, the company has completed the formalities for drilling the Dupitila-1 gas well.
The managing director said that based on previous reports, they estimate Tengratila may still hold more than two trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas.
SGFL currently supplies around 140 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national transmission line from 17 wells. The company expects to raise this supply to 260 million cubic feet by 2031.
