Nearly 1,000 accused, 4 cases filed
Four cases have been filed over clashes, vandalism and arson that erupted during a footpath eviction drive in the capital’s Mirpur-10 area.
Three of the cases were filed with Mirpur Model Police Station and another with Kafrul Police Station, naming around 1,000 people as accused.
Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman said on Thursday that the city corporation had filed a case over the burning of its vehicles, while police filed another case over attacks on law enforcers.
Traffic police also filed a separate case. Around 400 to 500 people have been named as accused in the three cases filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.
Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam said the city corporation had also lodged a case over the burning of its vehicles. Around 400 to 500 unidentified people have been accused in that case.
Police are conducting operations to arrest those allegedly involved in the violence.
The incident began at around 9:30 AM on Wednesday, September 30, when the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) launched an eviction drive against illegal occupation of footpaths from the Mirpur-10 roundabout towards Hope Market.
The operation was being conducted under the leadership of DNCC Executive Magistrate Marufa Begum Neli.
According to local shopkeepers and witnesses, a fire broke out after an excavator allegedly damaged an electrical cable while removing makeshift shops beneath the Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque Market near Hope Market.
Five shops were damaged in the fire. Two units of the Fire Service brought the blaze under control after around 15 to 20 minutes of effort.
Following the fire, angry hawkers and shopkeepers allegedly attacked city corporation officials, triggering clashes. When police arrived at the scene, clashes also broke out between law enforcers and the hawkers.
Police fired tear gas shells after protesters threw bricks and stones. Several police personnel were injured during the clashes.
Three city corporation vehicles were set on fire, while the glass of a police vehicle was vandalised.
Traffic movement on the road between Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-14 was temporarily suspended due to the clashes.
Journalists also faced obstruction while attempting to take photographs and record videos of the incident.
Later in the afternoon, DNCC resumed its eviction drive and removed makeshift shops from footpaths on both sides of the road between Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-13.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan later visited the affected area and inspected the damaged city corporation vehicles.
He described the attack and arson as “planned” and said cases would be filed against those involved. He also called for an investigation to identify and arrest the people responsible.
