Bangladesh lose to China, face Thailand for 7th place

Bangladesh were thrashed 7-1 by China in the men’s hockey classification match at the 20th Asian Games on Thursday, ending their hopes of a fifth- or sixth-place finish.

China dominated from the start scoring goals in regular interval held at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan.

Rakibul Hasan scored Bangladesh’s lone goal with a field goal in the 30th minute.

The defeat dents the target set by Gerhard and the Bangladesh Hockey Federation. Bangladesh have competed in Asian Games hockey since 1978, with four seventh-place finishes their best result. They finished eighth among 10 teams in Hangzhou in 2023.

Bangladesh will now face Thailand in the seventh-eighth place playoff on Oct 3, with the match scheduled for 6:30am Bangladesh time.

A top-six finish among 12 teams in Japan would have been a new high. A win against Thailand would at least secure seventh place and match Bangladesh’s best-ever Asian Games finish.
