Tongi youth hacked to death

A 23-year-old man was hacked to death by unidentified assailants near Tongi Railway Station in Gazipur while returning home from work early Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Joy, was the son of Sirajul Islam and a resident of the Bank Math slum area in Tongi.

According to police and local sources, Joy was on his way home after finishing work when a group of youths attacked him with sharp weapons at around 1am. The assailants fled the scene after hacking him indiscriminately.

Joy died at the scene from excessive bleeding.

Local residents later informed the Tongi Railway Police outpost. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

No one had been arrested in connection with the killing as of the filing of this report. Police initially suspect that previous enmity may have been behind the attack.

Nur Alam Hossain, sub-inspector and in-charge of the Tongi Railway Police outpost, said police were analysing CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an effort to identify the attackers.
He said a murder case would be filed with Kamalapur Railway Police Station in Dhaka over the incident.
