Oscar winner Susan, among 100 arrested

Movie star Susan Sarandon and Hacks actor Hannah Einbinder were among more than 100 people reportedly detained by New York police on Thursday during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The protest was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace as Netanyahu prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly. Demonstrators held banners reading “Stop Arming Israel” and “End the Genocide.”

According to the NYPD, officers responded to an “unscheduled demonstration” after protesters blocked an intersection. Police said members of the Community Affairs Bureau repeatedly warned participants to leave, but those who continued blocking the intersection were taken into custody.

Jewish Voice for Peace said more than 100 people were arrested after over 400 protesters staged a sit-in outside the UN, demanding an end to the war in Gaza and US military support for Israel.

AFP footage showed police leading Sarandon away in handcuffs. Einbinder was also detained during the demonstration.

Following her arrest, Einbinder said she wanted to draw attention to the suffering of Palestinians and people in southern Lebanon, as well as settler violence, home demolitions and Israeli military operations.

Her remarks were posted on her Instagram Story. Inside the UN General Assembly, dozens of delegates walked out as Netanyahu began his speech.

The Israeli prime minister used the address to defend his government’s actions and criticise several countries, including Britain and France, which have recently moved to recognise a Palestinian state.

Sarandon has previously spoken publicly against Israel’s war in Gaza. Earlier this month, she told journalists at the Venice Film Festival that she had lost acting opportunities because of her outspoken views on the conflict.
