70 hurt in BNP clash in Austagram

Two groups allegedly using bricks, sticks and locally made weapons

At least 70 people were injured in a violent clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated organisations at East Austagram in Austagram upazila of Kishoreganj on Friday noon.

The clash reportedly erupted over control of a waterbody in the Austagram haor and amid a longstanding dispute between supporters of Upazila BNP President Syed Sayeed Ahmed and Organising Secretary SM Shaheen.

The confrontation soon escalated into a fierce chase and counter-chase, with the two groups allegedly using bricks, sticks and locally made weapons.

At least 70 people were injured in the clash, according to local sources.

The injured were taken to Austagram Government Hospital, Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital and several private clinics for treatment.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Austagram Government Hospital Dr Aminul Islam said 22 injured people had received treatment at the hospital by 2pm. Five of them were admitted, while one seriously injured person was referred to Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital.

SM Shaheen alleged that he had taken a lease of the Bilmaksha waterbody, locally known as a jalmahal, last year. He claimed that although he was the highest bidder again this year.

Upazila BNP President Syed Sayeed Ahmed was obstructing the process in various ways.

Shaheen further alleged that after failing to resolve the matter through legal means, his rival was inciting local people to loot the waterbody. He also claimed that his supporters came under attack on Friday noon.

However, Syed Sayeed Ahmed denied the allegations. He claimed that supporters of Shaheen had initiated the attack on his people.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Austagram Police Station Md Roknuzzaman said additional police forces had been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.

“The situation is currently normal,” the OC said, adding that necessary action would be taken after investigation if a written complaint is received.
