Sundarbans rough sea forces fishing boats to seek shelter

Hundreds of fishing boats have taken shelter in coastal areas and different parts of the Sundarbans as the sea turned rough amid adverse weather.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued warning signal No. 3 for the maritime ports. Abul Hossain, president of the Shyamnagar Upazila Fishing Trawler Owners’ Association, said several hundred fishing boats had taken shelter at Rayenda, Mahipur, Khepupara, Nidrasakhina and Patharghata coastal areas, as well as at different locations in the Sundarbans, after being unable to withstand the rough sea, reports BSS.

“Some boats are still returning towards the coast,” he said.
Kabir Hossain, an aratdar at the Rajair fish landing station in Sharankhola, said the fishing fleet had remained anchored at the Rayenda fish landing station for the past two days due to the adverse weather.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Fishing Trawler Owners’ Association, said fishermen who had gone to sea were facing adverse weather and returning towards the coast to avoid the rough sea.

Milton Roy, forest ranger and officer-in-charge of the Dubla Forest Patrol Outpost, said there were no fishing boats in the sea due to the adverse weather.

He said strong winds and heavy rainfall were prevailing in the Dublar Char area.
