Bangladesh beat Syria 4-0 in Chess Olympiad

Bangladesh produced a dominant performance in the sixth round of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, defeating Syria 4-0 in the Open section held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The matches played on Monday last, International Master (IM) Mohammad Fahad Rahman, IM Manon Reja Neer, FIDE Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia and FIDE Master Sakline Mostafa Sajid secured convincing victories for Bangladesh.

Fahad defeated Syria’s FIDE Master Chekh Adm Khedr Aram, Neer beat FIDE Master Fandi Mazen, Tahsin overcame Rodi Bakr, while Sakline defeated IM Alzaim Talal.

The Bangladesh women’s team, however, suffered a 1-3 defeat to a strong Croatia side in the sixth round.

Women FIDE Master Noshin Anjum and Women Candidate Master Nusrat Jahan Alo held their respective opponents to draws. Noshin drew with Croatia’s Women FIDE Master Tihana Ivekovic, while Nusrat shared the point with Women International Master Kristina Saric.

Women International Master Wadifa Ahmed lost to FIDE Master Ena Cvitan, while Women Candidate Master Walijah Ahmed was defeated by Woman FIDE Master Lara Zagorac.

After six rounds, Bangladesh have collected eight points in the Open section, while the women’s team have earned six points.
