Unfit bus dumping triggers blockade at Mohakhali

Transport workers blocked Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Sarani in front of Mohakhali Bus Terminal on Thursday afternoon, protesting the traffic police’s dumping of buses found parked on the road and deemed unfit.

The blockade began around 3pm after workers parked buses on both sides of the road, bringing traffic in both directions between Mohakhali and Nabisco to a standstill. The road remained blocked until at least 4:30pm.

The protest also caused severe congestion on roads connecting Banani with Tejgaon Industrial Area and Moghbazar with Mohakhali, leaving commuters to suffer.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said traffic police had dumped the buses after finding them parked on the road.

“Transport workers have been blocking the road since 3pm in protest. Police are trying to talk to them,” he said.

According to the protesters, traffic police dumped the buses after finding them parked on the road and considering them unfit.

The workers are demanding that vehicles kept in the dumping yard be released within a maximum of 10 days instead of being held there for months.

They said the prolonged detention of buses in dumping yards was the immediate reason for taking to the streets and blocking the road.

As the blockade continued, traffic movement remained disrupted along the busy Mohakhali-Nabisco corridor, while congestion spread to surrounding roads.
