Cruelty to women, artistes increasing day by day: Peya Jannatul

Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon faced an unpleasant experience while participating in the Venice International Film Festival in Italy.

Model, actress and lawyer Peya Jannatul has now taken to social media to speak out about such unpleasant incidents happening abroad and the growing
insensitivity of people towards women and artistes.

Peya shared an emotional post on her Facebook page on Tuesday morning expressing her deep concern and disappointment.

Without directly mentioning the bond, she wrote, “People are becoming so cruel and insensitive day by day, especially towards women and artists, which is really heartbreaking.”

Highlighting the narrow-mindedness of some people living abroad, Peya further wrote, “It’s not true that people’s thinking changes or their minds become more open just by being outside the country.

For me, real progress is understood in how much a person respects others, how much they understand, and how humane they can be-that’s where it’s sad, it’s in these places that we’re slowly going backwards.”

Badhon was attacked in front of her brother and young child in a park in the Mestre area of Venice.

A video circulating on social media shows a group of people calling themselves ‘Venice Chhatra League’ and Bangabandhu’s soldiers abusing and physically abusing the actress, calling her a ‘July militant’.

Later, in a video message, Badhon described the abuse he suffered, saying she was physically abused, had cold drinks and water thrown at her, and had her mobile phone dragged and thrown away.

It is believed that the attack was carried out because of her active role on the streets during the 2024 student uprising.

Since this incident came to light, fellow artistes from the showbiz arena, politicians, and ordinary netizens have been expressing strong anger on social media and demanding the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved.
