10 lakh jobs planned in five years: Minister
The government aims to create 10 lakh jobs in the digital sector over the next five years and turn Bangladesh into a regional hub for information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Tuesday.
“The government is committed to building a modern, technology-driven and knowledge-based Bangladesh in line with the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman,” he said.
Faqir Mahbub Anam, who also serves as science and technology minister, made the remarks while addressing Bangladesh TechConnect 2026 as the chief guest, according to a ministry press release.
The conference was jointly organised by the Posts and Telecommunications Division and Huawei at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
The minister stressed the need to ensure reliable, secure, high-speed and affordable digital connectivity across the country. He said Bangladesh needed modern telecommunications infrastructure, stronger digital skills, greater investment and more support for local innovation.
Effective use of AI and digital technology would help increase productivity, create new employment opportunities and accelerate economic growth, he said.
He also emphasised the need to protect cybersecurity and personal data and ensure the responsible use of technology.
Calling for coordinated efforts by the public and private sectors, the minister said cooperation among the government, local industries and international technology partners was essential to building an inclusive and competitive digital economy.
Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Dr Md Kamruzzaman said the conference had created opportunities to strengthen cooperation between policymakers and industry representatives, with participants from government, businesses, educational institutions, development partners and the media.
Digital infrastructure was no longer a luxury but a key foundation for a prosperous, investment-driven and knowledge-based economy, he said.
Information and Communication Technology Division Secretary Md Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan outlined five strategic priorities for accelerating Bangladesh’s digital transformation: a strong legal and policy framework, reliable connectivity, digital public infrastructure, AI and cybersecurity, and local production.
He said work had begun on a national AI policy, which was expected to be completed within the next three to four months.
Huawei South Asia President Jason Wu said the company was committed to working with the government and industry partners to develop digital infrastructure and expand technology use in Bangladesh. He said Huawei would draw on its expertise in connectivity, cloud computing and AI to strengthen local industries, develop new services and support the country’s long-term digital growth.
Posts and Telecommunications Division Joint Secretary Saida Afroz presented the keynote paper.
Three panel discussions focused on future technology and connectivity, technology-driven industrial skills development, and global AI trends and Bangladesh’s preparedness.
Participants discussed the commercial potential of 5G, fixed wireless access and enterprise connectivity in sectors such as garments, ports, agriculture and healthcare. They also examined how cloud computing, automation, AI-based security and smart technologies could raise productivity, reduce operating costs and improve public services.
Speakers stressed the importance of reliable cloud infrastructure, data readiness, skilled workers and supportive policies to expand AI use in banking, manufacturing, freight, supply chains and government services.
The event also featured exhibitions on digital transformation, smart government, education, digital power, smartphones and AI, alongside roundtable discussions on digital power, AI, enterprise technology, the digital economy and employment.
More than 500 people, including government officials, policymakers, business leaders, technology experts, academics and development partners, attended the conference.
