7 food businesses fined Tk10 lakh by BFSA

The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) has continued its nationwide efforts to protect public health and ensure food safety through mobile courts, market monitoring and public awareness campaigns.

During the week from August 9 to 15, 2026, the authority took legal action against food establishments found violating the Safe Food Act, 2013, conducting drives in Dhaka and several districts.

In Dhaka Metropolitan, BFSA conducted raids on seven establishments during the period. Three establishments were fined a total of Tk 4 lakh, while three cases were filed under the Safe Food Act.

Outside the capital, mobile court operations were conducted at four establishments in Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar, Dhaka and Manikganj. The drives resulted in Tk 6 lakh in fines and four cases being filed.

Overall, seven establishments were fined a combined Tk 10 lakh, while seven cases were filed during the week.

Alongside enforcement drives, BFSA continued monitoring food establishments across the country. Regular inspections were carried out at markets, hotels and restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops, and food production and processing facilities.

A total of 130 food establishments were monitored during the week.

The authority also held a seminar titled “Role of Local Stakeholders in Stopping Open Sale of Edible Oil” in Joypurhat on August 14. The seminar was organized by BFSA and sponsored by the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh. State Minister for Food Abdul Bari attended the event as chief guest and inspected the activities of BFSA’s mobile laboratory van.

Public awareness activities were also stepped up during the week. Bangladesh Television aired a 14-minute message on trans fat, while Bangladesh Betar broadcast three separate safe-food messages for a combined 35 minutes. The campaigns focused on safe food consumption, healthy food production and marketing, and consumer rights.

BFSA also continued disseminating food-safety messages through social media, including pictures, reels and videos. At the same time, research activities were underway to strengthen food safety systems, assess risks and gather information to support policymaking.

BFSA Chairman Md. Shafiqul Islam said ensuring safe food remains one of the government’s priorities. He said the authority was working in a coordinated manner through law enforcement, regular monitoring, mobile courts, research and public awareness programmes, while stressing the importance of cooperation among the government, traders, producers, consumers and other stakeholders.

He added that BFSA’s activities would continue to be expanded and strengthened in the public interest.
