‘Will rebuild BD under Tarique’s leadership’
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan has said the government is committed to rebuilding Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with a focus on restoring democracy, development and the country’s reputation abroad.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar around noon on Saturday.
“After 17 years of authoritarian rule, he has devoted himself to taking the country towards democracy and development and establishing the rights of the people of Bangladesh,” Moyeen Khan said, referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He said Tarique Rahman had taken charge of the country at a critical juncture with the mandate of millions of voters.
“He is fully aware of the problems facing Bangladesh and the issues concerning the country. His aim is to resolve those problems, turn Bangladesh into a dynamic state and restore the country’s reputation on the global stage,” the minister said.
On the recent expansion of the cabinet, Moyeen Khan said it was part of a normal government process followed in many countries.
The minister also stressed the importance of preserving the country’s history and ensuring that younger generations learn about the Liberation War.
He said Bangladesh’s democratic journey had been disrupted several times and claimed that the BNP had continued its efforts to restore democracy.
Recalling the role of former president Ziaur Rahman, Moyeen Khan said he had declared Bangladesh’s independence from the Kalurghat radio station as the country was preparing for the Liberation War.
He also recalled former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s leadership of the BNP and her role in the democratic movement, noting that she became Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister through a popular mandate in 1991.
