Deed writers stage protest in Nilphamari with 7-point demand
Deed writers in Nilphamari held a protest rally, procession and memorandum-submission programme demanding implementation of their seven-point demand and urging the government not to deprive them of their profession in the name of modernising the deed registration system.
The programme was organised by the Nilphamari District Deed Writers’ Association on Tuesday. Later, a memorandum addressed to the Law Minister was handed over to Nilphamari Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Nuzhat Tasnim Awan.
Association President Md. Shafiqul Islam, General Secretary Md. Golam Rabbani, former General Secretary Abdullah and other leaders handed over the memorandum.
The seven-point demands include fixing the writers’ honorarium at Tk 5,000 per deed; issuing a gazette notification allowing only licensed deed writers to prepare deed drafts; stopping the issuance of new licenses without recommendations from the upazila, district and central committees; and providing designated spaces for deed writers to sit and pray at all sub-registry offices at government expense.
They also demanded a gazette notification to ensure that deed writers or draft preparers are not made accused in cases for performing their professional duties, permission to form a separate council for deed writers, and protection of their interests during modernization of the deed registration system.
The deed writers said they have been performing important duties lawfully for a long time. They urged the government to take effective measures so that modernization of the registration system does not threaten their professional security and livelihood.
The leaders of the association warned that they would launch larger programmes in the future if their demands are not implemented soon.
