‘Doctor of the poor’ Ali Akbar dies

Dr Ali Akbar, who devoted his medical career to serving poor and helpless people, died at the age of 70 in Dashmina of Patuakhali on Sunday.

He fell ill at his home at around 6am and was taken to Dashmina Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead after conducting the necessary examinations. News of his death spread quickly, prompting people from various unions of Dashmina upazila, including remote char areas, to rush to his residence to see their beloved doctor for the last time.

A mournful atmosphere prevailed at his residence as teachers from various educational institutions, leaders and activists of political and social organisations, and people from different walks of life gathered to pay their respects.

Known locally as the “doctor of the poor”, Dr Ali Akbar chose the medical profession not merely as a means of livelihood but as a way to serve people. He did not charge fixed consultation fees from helpless patients and was satisfied with whatever they could afford to pay.
