Miftah Siddiqui new chairman of Sylhet WASA

The government has appointed Miftah Siddiqui, co-organising secretary of the BNP’s national executive committee, as chairman of Sylhet WASA.

He was appointed through a notification signed by Md Aktarun Nesa, senior assistant secretary of the Water Supply-2 Branch of the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, on Sunday.

According to the notification, Miftah Siddiqui has been appointed chairman of the Sylhet WASA Board for a three-year term under Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Drainage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026.

Miftah Siddiqui holds a master’s degree in economics from Chittagong University. He has long been involved in political, social and public relations activities in Sylhet.

He has previously served as president of Sylhet MC College Chhatra Dal, senior joint secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, associate publicity secretary of the central Chhatra Dal, organising secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, member secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP and president of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP.

Miftah Siddiqui is currently chairman of Public Voice Working for Bangladesh, Holicity Collegiate School and the governing body of M Saifur Rahman Degree College.

Meanwhile, Sylhet city has been facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water for a long time.

The government has appointed him with the aim of improving the city’s water supply and sewerage systems, enhancing service quality and resolving various longstanding problems faced by residents.

Although the Sylhet WASA Board now has a chairman, no managing director has yet been appointed. Usually, a government official of secretary rank serves as the managing director of a WASA.
