Pink rally to cover 40 localities to promote breast cancer screening

The Pink Road Rally-2026 began in Dhaka on Friday morning, launching a breast cancer awareness campaign aimed at promoting early detection and encouraging timely treatment as it travels through several districts towards Chattagram.

More than 50 active voluntary organisations are participating in the initiative, which seeks to educate people about breast cancer, its symptoms and the importance of early detection.

Travelling in a specially decorated pink bus, participants will conduct roadside meetings, hold short rallies and distribute informational leaflets written in simple Bangla to reach communities along the route.

The rally was formally inaugurated by Prof Dr Md Habibullah Talukder Ruskin, chief coordinator of the Bangladesh Breast Cancer Awareness Forum and a cancer epidemiologist.

Addressing the inauguration, Prof Habibullah said the chances of recovery increased significantly when breast cancer was detected at an early stage. He stressed the importance of regular examinations at the grassroots level, early detection and wider public awareness.

Dr Syed Humayun Kabir, president of World Cancer Society Bangladesh and a cancer prevention specialist, also spoke at the event. He emphasised the need to strengthen social awareness and ensure regular screening to prevent breast cancer.

The first day’s programme will take the rally from Dhaka towards Barishal through Srinagar, Bhanga, Tekerhat, Rajoir, Kalkini, Torki Bandar, Gournadi, Batajor, Shikarpur and Wazirpur. Participants are scheduled to stay overnight in Barishal after completing the day’s activities.

In the next phase, the campaign will cover around 40 small and large localities, including Nalchity, Jhalakathi, Durgasagar, Banaripara, Babuganj, Rahmatpur, Mostafapur, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Naria, before returning to Dhaka.
World Cancer Society Bangladesh, Gonoshasthaya Kendra and several voluntary organisations are providing overall support for the initiative.
Participating organisations include World Cancer Society Bangladesh, COC, YWCA, Khorshed Jahan Haque Cancer Research and Hospital, Naripokkho, Gonoshasthaya Community-Based Cancer Hospital, BCF, Manabik Unnayan Kendra, Friends of Bangladesh, Jamalpur Samity Dhaka, Pallima Mohila Parishad, Aparajita, TMSS, CCEPRB, HIL, Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club District 328, among others.
The organisers hope the campaign will help dispel misconceptions about breast cancer, improve public understanding of its symptoms and encourage people to seek medical attention without delay.
Breast cancer awareness initiatives focus on recognising symptoms, promoting early detection and encouraging timely medical care. Through its outreach activities across different localities, the Pink Road Rally aims to bring these messages to communities beyond major urban centres.
