Quota system in worst form, says Shafiqur

Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday alleged that the quota system that triggered the July Uprising was now being implemented in its “worst form” through partisan appointments to key institutions.

“The government is promoting partisan recruitment instead of merit-based appointments,” he said at an exchange meeting with families of those killed in the uprising and July fighters at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka.

Shafiqur alleged that political considerations were influencing appointments to universities, banks, insurance corporations, district councils, and government and semi-government institutions.

“Qualified people are being removed, while dishonest and corrupt individuals are being selectively appointed to important positions,” he said.

The Jamaat chief claimed that his party had never reached a secret compromise with the previous government despite the killing of its leaders and activists and the seizure of their homes and businesses.

He also said Jamaat had supported the July 2024 movement from the beginning and rejected several offers of compromise.

Demanding justice for those killed during the uprising, Shafiqur accused the government of betraying the nation.

“Jamaat fears none but Allah and will never bow before injustice,” he added.
