HC clears 7,565 cases in a day

The High Court on Thursday disposed of 7,565 long-pending criminal miscellaneous cases, taking the total number of old cases resolved under its ongoing special disposal programme to 50,264 as part of efforts to reduce the judicial backlog and improve access to justice.

The High Court has crossed the milestone of disposing of more than 50,000 long-pending cases through its special weekly disposal programme aimed at accelerating the country’s judicial process.

On Thursday alone, 14 Criminal Motion Benches disposed of 7,565 old criminal miscellaneous cases, according to a press release.

The latest disposals raised the total number of old criminal miscellaneous cases settled under the initiative to 43,357 over 10 working days since the programme began. The campaign is conducted one day each week.

Including both criminal miscellaneous cases and old writ petitions, the High Court has so far disposed of 50,264 long-pending cases during the programme.

The special initiative is being implemented in accordance with the Chief Justice’s directive to expedite the disposal of longstanding cases pending before the High Court’s Criminal Motion Benches and Writ Motion Benches.

The programme is intended to provide quicker access to justice for litigants, ease the burden of pending cases and improve the efficiency of the country’s judicial system.

The special case disposal drive was launched on May 7 by dedicating one day every week to hearing and disposing of old criminal miscellaneous cases and writ petitions, with the objective of reducing the long-standing backlog in the High Court.
