Jamuna engulfs infrastructures in Sirajganj
In Jotpara village of Khas Kalia Union of Chauhali Upazila under Sirajganj, at least 14 homesteads along with a government primary school were lost under the river due to severe erosion of Jamuna river last Saturday night.
Hundreds more houses are at risk of collapse. As a result, there is extreme fear of erosion among the locals in this incident.
Locals said that part of two tin shed buildings of KK West Jotpara Government Primary School adjacent to Janata High School in Jotpara village collapsed in the Jamuna river. Along with this, some other homesteads also disappeared under the river.
Going to the surface, it is seen that the collapsed part of the school is hanging in the water of the river. Apart from this, several parts of the tin house of a homestead fell and floated in the river Jamuna.
To prevent this erosion, Sirajganj Water Development Board authorities have started dumping geo bags and geo tubes in vulnerable areas since Sunday morning.
In this regard Jotpara village said. Rabiul Molla said that last Saturday late night, this terrible erosion happened in a gap of only 40 minutes.
A total of 14 homesteads have disappeared under the river Jamuna. Hundreds of helpless people in the surrounding area are in fear of erosion. Many families have started moving their houses and valuables to safe places.
Anower Hossain of the same village said, “It is not possible to prevent this river erosion by just dumping geo bags. To prevent this erosion permanently, a durable river erosion protection dam should be constructed in a quick time.”
Locals complain that every year when the monsoon season comes, hundreds of homesteads, educational institutions and agricultural lands are lost in the Jamuna river.
But effective measures are not taken to permanently prevent this erosion. For this reason, they have requested the concerned authorities to take necessary effective measures as soon as possible.
Mokhlesur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board said on mobile phoneThe work of taking measures to prevent erosion in this area was already underway. 10,000 geo-tex bags and geo-tubes have been started to be dropped by the contractor since Sunday morning as the demolition started again from last Saturday midnight. This work will continue until the erosion is stopped.
