BB, CID, bKash launch campaign against online gambling

Bangladesh Bank, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and bKash have launched a joint awareness campaign warning that involvement in online gambling may lead to up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of as much as Tk1cr and arrest without a warrant.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the social, financial and legal consequences of online gambling, particularly among young people, according to a press release.

Advertisements highlighting the relevant legal provisions and penalties are being aired on television channels, published in newspapers and circulated on social media.

Several news outlets have also published reports detailing the harmful effects of gambling.

The organisations said the initiative reflected a joint commitment by the regulator, law-enforcement agency and financial service provider to combat online gambling.

They also warned those involved in online gambling and related activities that stakeholders would maintain zero tolerance towards such offences.

Major General Sheikh Md Monirul Islam (retd), Chief External and Corporate Affairs Officer of bKash, said the company was conducting the campaign jointly with Bangladesh Bank and CID as part of its responsibilities as a financial institution.

“We conduct awareness campaigns throughout the year to promote secure transactions across the financial ecosystem and will continue these efforts in the days ahead,” he said.

Jasim Uddin Khan, Special Superintendent of Police (Media), CID, said online gambling addiction was growing alongside the expansion of technology.

“Many assume that no one will know or be able to trace them if they gamble online, but a digital trail always remains,” he said.

“This joint initiative has been launched to reiterate the strict provisions of the law, and everyone must remain vigilant to protect themselves.”
